Goshen's historic village and its newer edges
Goshen's village center is a genuinely historic district, with substantial 19th-century homes, deep original trim, plaster walls and paint histories going back generations. Away from the center the town opens into farmland, newer subdivisions and the county government and courthouse complex.
Interior work in older Goshen homes is frequently as much repair as painting. Long plaster cracks, delaminated sections, thick built-up paint on original woodwork that has lost its detail, and rooms that have been papered and repapered. Doing this properly means assessing and repairing the plaster, and often stripping wallpaper and skim coating before any color goes up. It takes longer and it's the only approach that looks right afterward.
Nearly all of the older village stock is pre-1978, so lead-safe practices apply. On exteriors, original wood trim and detailed millwork need hand scraping and priming rather than aggressive mechanical stripping.
Newer Goshen construction is a completely different job — larger, simpler interiors where the work is efficient two-coat wall and trim painting on a clear schedule.
