Interior painting is the fastest, highest-return change you can make to a house — and the one where the difference between a good crew and a cheap one is most obvious. Roller stipple on a ceiling, a wavy line where the wall meets the trim, flashing over a patch that was never primed: those are prep failures, and no amount of expensive paint hides them.

What a KB interior repaint actually includes

Every interior job starts the same way, whether it's one bedroom or an entire house: we move and centralize furniture, drop-cloth floors wall to wall, mask fixtures and flooring transitions, and set up containment before a single can is opened. Prep is the majority of the labor on a well-done interior job, and it's the part low bidders quietly delete.

Then the surfaces get made right. Nail pops are reset and spackled. Hairline cracks over doors and windows get cut out, taped and feathered rather than skimmed over so they don't telegraph back through in six months. Old patchwork, high-gloss trim and stained areas get spot-primed so the topcoat lays down uniformly instead of flashing. Glossy or previously-oil trim is scuff-sanded and bonded before it sees a finish coat.

Only then does paint go on: two full coats on walls in almost every case, cut in by hand at the ceiling line and trim, with ceilings and trim done in the correct order so overspray and drips never end up somewhere they have to be chased.

Rooms and surfaces we paint

A whole-home interior scope for us typically covers living and family rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, hallways, stairwells, kitchens (walls and ceilings), bathrooms, home offices, finished basements and the inside of closets. Two-story foyers and open stairwells — the areas that need staging and a crew comfortable working at height — are a regular part of our work, not an upcharge surprise.

Trim work covers baseboard, casing, crown, chair rail, wainscot and panel molding, interior doors (both faces and the edges), window sash and stools, and stair risers, treads, balusters and handrails. We'll also paint radiator covers, built-in bookcases, mudroom cubbies and laundry cabinetry.

Ceilings are a separate line item worth taking seriously. A flat ceiling white over a room that's been repainted three times still shows every past roller lap unless it's rolled properly in one direction with a wet edge maintained. We spray or roll depending on the room and whether it's occupied.

Living in the house while we paint

Most of our interior customers are living in the home during the work, so how a crew behaves matters as much as how they paint. We work in sections rather than tearing the whole house apart at once, keep a walkable path clear, and put the room back together at the end of each day rather than leaving furniture piled in the middle for two weeks.

We use low-VOC and zero-VOC products for occupied interiors as a default, which means rooms are usable the same evening in most cases rather than needing to be aired out for days. If you have small children, pets or anyone with respiratory sensitivity in the house, tell us at the estimate and we'll spec the product line accordingly.

Trash, tape, masking and empty cans leave with us daily. So does the drop cloth dust. You should not be finding blue tape behind a door in March.

Older homes and lead-safe work

A lot of Orange County's housing stock predates 1978 — village centers in Warwick, Goshen, Montgomery, Walden and the City of Newburgh especially. Any disturbance of painted surfaces in a pre-1978 home falls under the EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) rule, which governs how sanding and scraping are contained, how the site is cleaned and what documentation the homeowner receives.
