Color Consultation

Choosing color is the part of a paint project that keeps people awake. It's also the part where a two-inch chip from the paint store is close to useless — color reads completely differently at scale, next to your flooring, under your bulbs, and at 4pm in January versus 10am in June.

We include color guidance with every project, and offer a deeper consultation for whole-home palettes. There's no mystique to it. We put real samples on real walls and look at them properly.

How we approach color

We start with what isn't changing — flooring, counters, cabinets, tile, stone, a fixed sofa, the roof and siding on an exterior. Those undertones set the constraints. A greige that looks perfect in isolation will read distinctly pink or green against the wrong floor, and that's not something you can predict from a chip.

Then we look at the light. North-facing rooms in the Hudson Valley get cool, flat light and will pull blue or gray out of anything, which is why so many 'warm grays' turn out cold once they're up. South-facing rooms get warm light that pushes yellows. West-facing rooms change dramatically between morning and evening. Recessed LEDs at 2700K versus 4000K will meaningfully shift a color on the same wall.

Finally we sample properly: large painted boards, at least a couple of square feet, placed on multiple walls in the room and left there for a day or two so you can see them in morning light, afternoon light and lamplight. Boards rather than painted patches, so we can move them around and so you aren't left with test squares to cover.

Sheen: the decision people forget to make

Sheen affects durability and appearance as much as color does, and it's where the wrong choice shows up fastest.

Flat and matte hide surface imperfections best and give the richest color, but they're harder to clean. Right for ceilings and low-traffic adult bedrooms; modern scrubbable mattes have made them viable in more rooms than they used to be.

Eggshell is the workhorse for living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms and hallways — enough sheen to wipe, little enough to be forgiving.

Satin for kitchens, bathrooms, mudrooms, laundry rooms and children's rooms, where you'll actually be scrubbing walls.

Semi-gloss for trim, doors, casing and cabinetry — it wipes clean and gives the crisp definition between wall and trim that makes a room look finished.

Whole-home palettes and exterior color

Individual rooms are easy. What's hard is a palette that flows — where the hallway color works as a spine, the open-plan spaces read as one, and each room feels distinct without the transitions feeling abrupt. That's what a whole-home consultation actually delivers.

Exterior color is a different discipline again. It has to work with fixed elements you're not changing — roof color, stone or brick, window frames, gutters — and it has to work at a distance and against Hudson Valley greenery, which is a much stronger visual influence than most people account for. Exterior colors also read two to three shades lighter outdoors than they do on a chip indoors, which is why so many houses end up paler than the owner intended. We sample on the actual house and look at it from the street.
