What the job involved

Kitchens are the hardest interior room to paint well and the easiest to paint badly. The walls carry a film of cooking grease that is completely invisible and will stop any coating from bonding. Skip the degreasing step and the paint looks perfect for six months and then starts lifting around the range.

So this job started with a proper wash-down of every wall surface, followed by stain-blocking primer over the areas behind the range and around the sink where years of splatter had left marks that would otherwise bleed through.

Sheen selection mattered here as much as color. The kitchen went in a satin finish so it can actually be scrubbed, while the connected dining and living areas took an eggshell — enough sheen to wipe, forgiving enough not to highlight every wall imperfection across a large open span. The two meet at a natural architectural break so the change in sheen doesn't read as a mistake.

Ceilings across all three connected spaces were done in one pass with a maintained wet edge. In an open plan you cannot roll a ceiling in sections and come back to it — the lap line will be visible from the far end of the room for as long as the paint is on there.
